EastEnders could be facing the chop if the Conservatives get their way, according to a report in The Express.
The publication claims that the UK government could bring in a policy which would force the BBC to scrap shows of a similar nature to their commercial rivals.
(In other words, because ITV has Coronation Street and X Factor, the BBC would be pushed to drop EastEnders and The Voice.)

The broadcaster has apparently addressed the suggestion for more “targeted programming” in a response.
It said: “It does not make practical sense to say that the BBC should only make a programme if another broadcaster never would.
“That would mean that when ITV made Broadchurch, the BBC would have to stop making Happy Valley. It would mean that we should stop doing EastEnders because ITV does Coronation Street.”
