“Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens.” “You better shape up.” “Somewhere over the rainbow.”
Sometimes it only takes a couple of words for an entire movie to come rushing back into your mind, and that’s why we love movie musicals so much.
Here are ten of our favourites – how many of your top picks have made the cut?
1. The Sound of Music (1959)
From ‘The Hills Are Alive‘ and ‘Edelweiss‘ to ‘Do-Re-Mi‘ and ‘So Long, Farewell,’ this is our very favourite movie musical. Set in the gorgeous surroundings of Salzburg (worth a trip for any fanatics out there like us!), The Sound of Music holds a very special place in our hearts and it’s one we’re happy to watch over and over again. We’re part of the Von Trapp family for life.
2. Singin’ In The Rain (1952)
The title song and accompanying iconic scene of this classic film is probably the most famous of all movie musical moments. And it’s a good’un. Starring the legendary Gene Hackman in some of the most memorable dance scenes of movie history, this is the mother of all musicals. ‘Good Morning‘ and ‘All I Do Is Dream Of You‘ are just two of the other notable songs it brought into our lives.
3. Moulin Rouge (2001)
The costumes, the caberet, the romance, the heartbreak. We love every aspect of this movie. It’s hard to believe that it’s been nearly 15 years since Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman teamed up for this show-stopping musical. Packed full of classic hits including Elton John’s ‘Your Song‘ and smash hit ‘Lady Marmalade,’ this is one soundtrack we’re still happy to listen to on repeat. And we’re not even sorry about it.
4. The Wizard of Oz (1939)
“There’s no place like home,” and there’s no musical quite so special as The Wizard of Oz. A must-watch every Christmas morning, we’ll never tire of following Judy Garland along the Yellow Brick Road to the Emerald City. ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow‘ and ‘Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead‘ are just some of the classic tunes in this heart-warming film.
5. Mary Poppins (1964)
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious isn’t long enough a word to describe how much we love this film. Mary Poppins and her magic umbrella changed the face of nannies forever and we love Julie Andrews for doing just that. From ‘A Spoon Full of Sugar‘ to ‘Chim Chim Cheree‘ this classic musical is packed full of fantastic hits. Let’s go fly a kite…
6. Chicago (2002)
The film that won Catherine Zeta-Jones her Best Supporting Actress Oscar, this is one of the best movie musical adaptations of the 21st century. Packed full of top-notch performances from its star-studded cast, Chicago is rousing, energetic, hilarious, and all that jazz.
7. Mama Mia (2008)
The ultimate feel-good musical of the last ten years. The all-singing all-dancing Abba movie set in the gorgeous surroundings of the Greek island of Skopelos is a feast for the eyes and the ears. Meryl Streep’s energetic performance carries the ridiculous plot – it’s impossible not to sing (and dance along to this film. Shout out to Pierce Brosnan and his slick dance moves!
8. Les Miserables (2012)
Eddie Redmayne and Hugh Jackman stole our hearts in this incredible screen adaptation of the world-famous musical. Featuring some of our very favourite rousing numbers including ‘Do You Hear The People Sing‘ and ‘I Dreamed A Dream,’ it’s not hard to see why Les Mis was nominated for a staggering eight Academy Awards. It’s just one show-stopper after another.
9. Grease (1978)
The tightest pair of trousers in cinema history. John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John lit up screens all over the world in this classic 70s flick, and it’s rip-roaring soundtrack sounds just as good as it did back then. “I’ve got chills, they’re multiplying.”
10. Pitch Perfect (2012)
There’s only one word to describe this film: aca-awesome. Amazing acappella, a plethora of puns, college drama and a collection of hilarious characters. The most recent addition to our favourite movie musicals, Pitch Perfect has it all. You aca-belive it.
