There are some great TV shows lined up for Christmas on BBC

Plenty for everybody.

Plenty for everybody.

While we still rely on the RTÉ Guide to plan our Christmas binge watch, the BBC have announced some of the festive delights that they’ll be broadcasting on ‘the channels’.

Here are some of the TV highlights. Still no word on the movies yet, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled.

The much anticipated return of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman in Sherlock sees the world’s most popular detective return to home soil. In New York, the Doctor is back on screen for the first time in a year, as Peter Capaldi joins forces with an investigative journalist and a superhero in a bid to save the city in brand new Dr Who The Return of Mysterio.

Mary, Paul, Mel and Sue will be eager to taste some Christmas bakes in The Great Christmas Bake Off and Mrs Brown turns into Scrooge as she refuses to put up her Christmas tree.

There’s also going to be some animated adventures and drama with Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes.

The baubles are out for the Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special and more winners will be crowned on Sports Personality Of The Year and The Apprentice Final.

For music lovers, Top Of The Pops once again returns on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, as does Jools Holland with his annual Hootenanny.

Despite all of this Christmas cheer, we’ve no doubt that Eastenders will still do an ample job of ruining Christmas Day with some remarkably depressing storyline. Bah humbug!
