Father Ted star Pauline McLynn is joining the cast of EastEnders according to reports this morning.

The actress, who is best known for her role as Mrs Doyle in the comedy series, apparently has a “recurring guest role” as Yvonne Cotton, the mother of Charlie Cotton (Declan Bennett).

Speaking about the news, the soap’s executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins said: “I have always been a little in love with Pauline McLynn so I’m so excited that she’s joining the Cotton family.

“It was about time Albert Square had another Irish character and I know that viewers are going to both love and be intrigued by Yvonne Cotton.”

McLynn, who will appear on our small screens from next month, was also very excited about the prospect of working with a television icon.

She told Digital Spy: “It is a thrill to join EastEnders, my favourite soap, and in particular any chance to be part of a Dot Cotton storyline is not to be passed up – June Brown is a legend and I feel privileged to act with her.”

We can only imagine the amounts of tea these two are going to drink!
