Double, Double, Toil and Trouble: 9 Of The Greatest On-Screen Witches

Some of them were good, others... Well, they may have been a little evil.

Sue Murphy

It’s the Season of the Witch! Well, not really but the release of Oz got us thinking about our favourite on-screen witches. So grab your broom, your favourite spell book and bring along your cat, here are the best (and by best we also mean most evil) witches in town…

1. The Witches from Hocus Pocus

A classic children’s movie for Halloween, everyone loves Bette Midler in this old favourite. “Oh look, another glorious morning. Makes me SICK!”

2. The Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz

We know quite a few people who had nightmares about this particular witch when they were younger…

3. The Sisters in Practical Magic

Sisters who were raised unconventionally have to fight a family curse which states any man they fall in love with will die an untimely death. Genius plot line and Sandra Bullock. Sold.

4. Nancy in The Craft

How many of you had sleepovers that were really excuses for “séances”? Come on, hands up!

5. Samantha from Bewitched. The ORIGINAL Bewitched.

Being allowed to take the day off school meant you could see Bewitched with the glorious Samantha… and attempt to cast spells while wriggling your nose… No we didn’t do that either.

6. Willow in Buffy

We’re not quite sure how it happened either. First, you’re friends with a Vampire Slayer and then you’re an evil witch?

7. Sabrina The Teenage Witch

Did we watch it because we wanted to be Sabrina or because we really loved Salem the talking cat? Hard to tell.

8. Bellatrix in Harry Potter

Wait, did she just kill that cute guy that we don’t want to mention the name of because it’s a spoiler? Spoiler clip!

9. Wicked Witch in Snow White

One of the originals and one of the best. She was just pure evil…

Honourable Mention

Professor Minerva McGonagall in Harry Potter

We had to include another Harry Potter character because it’s Maggie Smith. DAME Maggie Smith. You will kneel!
