It may be the most anticipated film of the year but residents in Buncrana will have to travel farther afield if they want to see Fifty Shades Of Grey.
The controversial movie, based on E.L. James’ hit novel, was refused distribution in the Donegal town as the local cinema, located in St. Mary’s Hall, is a single screen cinema and cannot play a film for seven consecutive days – which is part of the terms of distribution for the movie.
The clarification comes amid earlier reports that the steamy flick had been banned after complaints from Christian campaigners.
Though many local fans may be bitterly disappointed by the news, the decision has been welcomed by local woman Mary Doherty, who said it was a “relief” that it would not be screened.
“The whole film is purely about sexual content and there is so much sexual violence in it. It couldn’t possibly happen under the church; they couldn’t possibly put a film like this out,” she said.
We’re just going to leave this here…
