Every movie company has entered a period of panic over the last few years with the spread of piracy. Despite attempts to curtail illegal downloading and reproduction, the companies have been finding it difficult to prevent movie piracy.
In a bold decision in South Korea, movie companies Sony and Disney have begun testing a streaming online service. The companies will allow customers to rent the movies while they are still appearing in cinemas, according to the Verge.
Films like Wreck-It Ralph, Brave and Django Unchained have all been made available to customers.
Even though film companies make a significant profit from successful openings in theatres, occasionally they can even re coop the money from a loss in DVD sales. This has always been a very important income for the companies.
If the project is rolled out in other countries, cinemas may begin to suffer from the option that customers will be given to be watch films from the comfort of their own home.
The companies have not confirmed if the project will be tested outside Asia.
