Sleep Is Overrated: Laura Whitmore’s Brilliant Weekend

In her latest Her.ie column, Laura Whitmore tells us about an amazing few days in her life, starring Rita Ora, Nicki Minaj and a certain Olympic Torch...

One of the first festivals I ever reported on for MTV was Wireless Festival. It’s hard to believe this is my fourth year at London’s number one music event – I think I’m getting old! And with no Oxegen festival this year, I’ve got to get my fix when I can.

Rita Ora opened up the show on Saturday and what a year it’s been for this lady. Being Jay Z’s protégé is no easy task and having the biggest selling single of the year with RIP (feat Tinie Tempah) has propelled this lady into the spotlight. She had her mammy with her backstage at the festival, which just goes to show it doesn’t matter how big you get, you always need your mammy.

There’s another reason I love this lady – red lipstick! Anyone who knows me, knows my secret to looking glam when I’m feeling far from glam is a splash of colour to my lips. Even when the bags under my eyes are full to the brim and I’m covered in mud, the red lipstick saves the day. I’m rocking Clinique Red Rouge Impact, which looks pretty close to Rita’s.

I met Nicki Minaj on Saturday night too, who is more a neon pink lipstick lady and has the biggest entourage and wardrobe I’ve ever scene. But to be honest, I wouldn’t expect anything less from the phenomenon that is Miss Minaj.

My alarm clock went off at 3am on Sunday morning – an ungodly hour that should only be experienced coming home from a night out, not as a wake up time. With 3 hours sleep, which is not enough for me, BELIEVE me, my MTV producer Gareth and I headed to Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire…. I was preparing to take part in a little thing called the Olympic Torch Relay.

Go Laura! Our gal does Ireland proud carrying the Olympic flame. Whoop!

I don’t think I was prepared for what an emotional morning it would be. I ran just before 9am and the streets were lined with crowds of people who’d been there since the crack of dawn. The other torchbearers were truly inspirational people and to be amongst them was such an honour.  And guess what… I didn’t fall, I didn’t drop the torch and I didn’t set anything on fire (Gareth was worried my ponytail could of been a hazard)

Straight after the relay, it was straight back to Wireless at Hyde park where I got on stage in front of 65,000 people to introduce Jessie J on stage. No rest for the wicked.
