The royal dress code for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding has been revealed and according to the royal invites, it’s Dress: Uniform, Morning Coat or Lounge Suit for the men attending and Day Dress with Hat for the female guests.

This is in keeping with the usual attire deemed appropriate for royal weddings but it does mean that for female guests, wearing a hat is absolutely essential.

Although hats are often worn to weddings, it’s usually up to the guests if they want to wear one but not so with what’s been dubbed the wedding of the year.

As pointed out by Hello magazine, this means Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge and Harry’s sister-in-law, will have no choice but to wear a hat on the day.

Of course, Kate is no stranger to hats having chosen a blush pink rose hat from Jane Taylor for her sister Pippa Middleton’s wedding to James Matthews last year.

According to Town and Country magazine, headpieces will also be permitted but it’s important that they “make a statement”.

Etiquette expert Myka Meier told the publication:

“It’s got to be over the top, it’s got to be big”.

She also predicted that handbags carried on the day will be small owing to “very tight seating” and here’s what she has to say about the hats.

“The bigger, and the more decorated, the more festive. It’s almost like your way of showing your support for the occasion”.
