Retired Irish footballer Damien Duff has spoken out about how his toddler son Woody has overcome a heart defect after undergoing major surgery.

Duff and wife Elaine are proud mum and dad to two kids, their second child Darcy was born last September.

Duff and Elaine have revealed that they feared for Woody since Elaine’s 32-week scan.

“We spotted it on a 32-week scan before he was even born so it was a long wait until he came,” Damien told the Irish Sun.

“The doctors said they wouldn’t do the surgery until he was two years old.”

Woody needed open heart surgery to correct the congenital heart defect.

The operation has given the little boy a whole new lease of life.

Duff is now proud ambassador for Heart Children Ireland.

“All is good now,” Duff said, “We got the all-clear. We just have to go back for a few check-ups, but there’s not a bother on him.

“He has got a clean bill of health. There’s one or two more scans and that’ll be the end of it.”

The thirty-four-year-old is now the official ambassador for Heart Children Ireland and said that accepting the invitation was a “no-brainer”.
