Teenager Leon Connon is fighting for his life after getting his head and neck trapped in railings near his home in Kinsale, Co.Cork.
14-year-old Leon was with friends on Saturday night when he began feeling unwell.
It is thought the teenager went to rest on the fence but then collapsed and became trapped between the railings.
His friends tried to free him but their attempts failed and Leon struggled to breathe.
They then raised the alarm alerting Leon’s mother who rushed to the scene with a neighbour.
Kinsale RLNI crewman Killian Murphy helped perform CPR on the boy for almost an hour before they finally managed to restore a pulse. “It was very faint but we finally got a pulse. We are all just hoping now that he pulls through,” he said.
The teenager was rushed to hospital where he is now in a ‘critical but stable’ condition, reports the Irish Mirror.
Gardaí who were called to the scene have begun an investigation but are said to be treating the matter as a tragic accident.
