Ever need to stay motivated on your path to business success? Sometimes it helps to know that not every start-up begins in an office, or there can be a hitch or two along the way.

Each month we’ll take a trip down memory lane to re-visit a business story.

This month: Amazon, launched July 1994

The world is no stranger to Amazon.com – the largest online retailer selling everything from books, DVDs, CDs, consumer electronics, toys, jewellery and more.

Established on July 5th, 1994, the company started the site originally under the name Cadabra.com but was later changed by owner Jeff Bezos to make the stand out more. The company also preferred to rename themselves under an “A” name to rank at the top of any lists alphabetized.

Originally starting in music and VHS, the company branched out into multiple shopping segments and now hosts individual sellers, companies and brand pages on their site.

Launching in 1994, Amazon only took its service online in 1995, since growing to an international site with separate retail domains for United States, United Kingdom, France, Canada, Germany, Italy, Spain, Australia, Brazil, Japan, China, India and Mexico. The company plan to expand into Sri Lanka and other South East Asian countries soon, with specialised websites for both regions.

Amazon have continued to develop their website offer with technology advances, including the company entering the e-book hardware industry in 2007 with the release of the original Kindle reader.
