Eye liner has grown in popularity hugely in the last number of years. In fact, a lot of women say it’s their must-have product.
But with so many different types of eye liner on offer, it can be tricky to know which one to choose in order to get your desired look.
To help you, we’ve compiled a short list of the various types of eye liner you can get and what effects they can be used for.
Pencil
This is the most popular type of eye liner because it is probably the easiest to use and is perfect for daily wear because it gives a matte finish. Pencil liner can be used above your top lashes and also underneath your bottom lashes. From drawing lines to creating a smudged effect, it’s extremely diverse and also comes in a number of colours.
Good for daily wear and matte finish BUT bad for doing defined lines.

Cream/Gel
Cream and gel eye liners are very similar. They both come in a pot and unless you want a huge splodge of it around your eyes, require a brush for application. Slanted eye liner brushes are the best type to use because they are very fine, although you’ll still need a very steady hand! Cream and gel liners are excellent for achieving the smoky effect and are easy to combine.
Good for combining colours and creating a smoky effect BUT bad for daily use.

Liquid
Perfect for a night out, liquid eye liner is the most dramatic-looking. It is tricky to apply because one tiny slip and you’ll have to start all over again. The key is to take your time and apply it using short strokes as opposed to trying to get one full line on one swoop. It’s ideal for getting a strong line and is what it used to get the precise flick at the edge of your eye.
Good for a dramatic effect and flicks BUT bad for those with shaky hands.

Glitter
This is a type of liquid liner but obviously, as the title suggests, creates a glitter effect. Like the liquid, it can be used both above the upper and under the lower lashes. The brush tends to be thicker than what you would have with a normal liquid liner. Nowadays you can pretty much get glitter eye liner in any colour so it doesn’t matter what you’re wearing on your night out.
Good for a night out and combined with colour eye shadow BUT bad for everyday wear.
