Colour chameleon Ashlee Simpson is quite the trend setter when it comes to hairstyle and colour. She is one of the few who has carried off different shades of blonde, brunette and red with confidence and always seems to get her chosen shade just right.  According to Joanne Kelly, Clairol Colour Ambassador, the trick, when selecting a hair colour, is to look at your skin tone.

“If you tend to suit silver jewellery, have fair or rosy skin and your eyes are blue, green or grey, your skin tone is most likely to be ‘cool’.  You should opt for shades with ash, cool or neutral shade descriptors, such as nice’n easy Natural Light Ash Blonde (shade no.102), Natural Medium Mahogany Brown (shade no.118E) and Rich Medium Neutral Brown (shade no. 129). You should avoid shades warm or golden in the shade name.”

“If you suit gold jewellery, have peachy skin, brown or green eyes and tend to suit creams, browns and autumnal colours, you are most likely to have a warm skin tone. You should go for those with warm or golden shade descriptor such as nice’n easy Natural Warm Auburn (shade no.109A) and Natural Dark Golden Brown (shade no.120A). You should avoid the ashier, cool or neutral shades.”

Taylor Swift hasn’t deviated much from her trademark dark blonde tresses, making the most of what nature gave her.  Her hair always looks perfectly groomed and healthy looking. “If you are colouring your hair at home, it is important to be realistic about what you can achieve.  You should only ever go within two to three shades of your natural colour to ensure the best results.” To achieve a similar shade at home, Joanne recommends Perfect 10 by nice ‘n easy in Medium Champagne Blonde (shade no. 8.5A). “Always carry out an allergy alert test 48 hours before colouring your hair at home. Don’t forget to use the inbox Colour Seal Gloss Conditioner after colouring and then weekly as conditioning treatment. It helps to seal in colour and maximise shine.”

Sophia Vergara is one of Hollywood’s hottest brunettes. She carries off her natural light brown shade as beautifully as she does the rich chocolate and espresso shades seen in many of her glamorous red carpet looks. For brunettes looking to enrich their natural colour at home, a demi permanent colour with no ammonia is the perfect choice, such as nice’n easy No Ammonia (up to 24 washes) in Dark Warm Brown (shade no. 82), featuring new and improved nice’n easy Colour Seal Gloss conditioner, with added fruit oils and aloe vera. Hair is left smoother, after use, while the intensely conditioning formula helps lock in colour for longer.

Red shades are always popular, thanks to inspirational celebrity redheads like Christina Hendricks, the epitome of the classic redhead.  A naturally dark blonde, she first coloured her hair when she fell in love with Anne of Green Gables’ long red plaits. She is quoted as saying when she went red she truly felt herself.  Since then, she has flirted with many different shades in the red spectrum, from beautifully bright, flame reds to darker ruby shades. “If you choose to go red at home, it is important to remember the challenge with bright, vibrant shades is that they can fade more quickly than other shades,” says Joanne. “Use a colour care shampoo and conditioner to help maintain the vibrancy of your coloured hair.”

Holly Willoughby’s beautiful blonde locks always look bouncy, glossy and groomed. When going blonde at home, as with all home hair colours, only lighten up to within 2-3 shades of your natural colour. ”Many of us had blonde hair as a child but have gone darker as we have become older. If you were naturally blonde as a child, particularly by the end of summer, the chances are your skin tone will also suit a lighter shade than your natural colour,” says Joanne Kelly.

If you are still unsure about a new shade and want colour without commitment, try the nice’n easy No Ammonia range in either up to 8 washes or up to 24 washes. You could also visit the Try It On Studio section at www.clairol.ie where you can see on screen how different shades and cuts look in Clairol’s virtual salon before you make your final decision.
