Are the Following Beauty Clichés True or False

Have you ever wondered if shaving makes hair growth worse? Or whether cucumber is good for your eyes? We get down to the bottom of these popular beauty clichés.

Rebecca McKnight

We’ve all heard about how you should do this and do that when it comes to beauty methods and regimes.

But have you ever wondered if all these beauty clichés passed down through the generations are actually true?

Even if you haven’t, the Her.ie team certainly have and we are happy to investigate a few of them on your behalf.

1.       Cucumber placed over the eyes: FALSE

Cucumbers certainly make a healthy snack but their ability to reduce dark circles and puffiness around the eye areas is a little skewed. It is not the cucumber itself that gets rid of these problems but more the temperature of it. Cool objects help to reduce puffiness which means you could potentially use a number of objects. Teaspoons and cold teabags are also common objects quoted in this way.  Although we admit that cucumbers look a little less crazy.

2.       Tissue to finish off your lipstick: TRUE

Technically it’s not necessary to finish off you lipstick application using a tissue but it does help to remove any particles that might be on your lips and smooth out the lipstick. It is also handy if you want to achieve a more matte finish to your lips.

3.       Sweep your blusher brush upwards: FALSE

You always see actresses in the movies and on television sweeping their blusher up from their cheekbone towards their hairline. But apparently this can lead to you clogging up your pores which can in turn lead to blemishes. For this reason you should make small downward strokes with your blusher brush instead. In saying that we chop and change depending on how long we’ve slept in that morning!

4.       You need your beauty sleep: TRUE

While it doesn’t really matter when you have a full bag of makeup filled with concealers and highlighters, but the amount of sleep you get does directly impact upon your appearance. According to research those who are sleep deprived look more tired and thus less attractive. From paleness to dark under eye circles, a lack of sleep can cause a number of things. As if we needed an excuse to get some extra shuteye.

5.       Shaving makes hair growth worse: FALSE

We were all told this myth by our mothers when we first asked about shaving. And we’ll admit it did deter us for a while until we learned how to work the internet and did our own research. Apparently when you shave the hair grows back coarser than before which makes it appear thicker. But in essence it is not thicker and there is not more of it.

We don’t know about you but we fancy an afternoon nap. After all, we do actually need our beauty sleep!
