The fashion industry is thriving in Ireland and we have seen a steady growth in recent years.

With this is mind there is a constant demand for highly creative employees to work in a number of areas in this industry, from Buying and Merchandising and Visual Display through to Fashion Design and Styling.

Located in the heart of the city centre, Portobello Institute deliver a range of industry led fashion courses to supply this ever increasing demand.

Portobello Institute prides itself on its expert tutors who collectively have worked for some of the biggest names in the industry including Brown Thomas, Harvey Nicholas and Louise Kennedy to name a few.

The majority of courses are FETAC accredited which provides an ideal platform for those wishing to progress onto a degree course.  Recognised throughout Europe, a FETAC qualification is an excellent entry level into this exciting yet challenging sector.

The Fashion Buying and Merchandising course is one of the most popular courses and teaches the skills necessary to succeed as a buyer in today’s competitive environment.

While fashion trends change from season to season the fundamental role of the fashion buyer and merchandiser remain the same.

Buyers play a central role within the infrastructure of the retail team, tracking and analyzing seasonal trends, ensuring production costs are kept within budget and most importantly ensuring profit and growth for the company.

While the role of a Visual Merchandiser has similar characteristics, you must also have a strong sense of style teamed with innovation to create eye-catching displays.

Course tutors work closely with industry experts coordinating work placements and events where students can get involved and gain invaluable hands on experience.

Most recently the fashion students were fortunate to work at high profile fashion events and projects such as the U Magazine High Street Awards, Arnotts Customer Fashion Show, Fran & Jane window design and installation, in addition to numerous charity fashion shows.

Further field trips to key events throughout the year such as Pure in London further enhance and develop industry insight and knowledge.

Portobello believe that this hands on experience teamed with the standard academic studies are crucial to the success of the course and indeed the individual students.
