Our classic movie pick of the week is one of the most overlooked of Paul Greengrass’ films is the wonderful, informative and brilliantly shot Bloody Sunday.
Based on the true story concerning the events of January 30, 1972, when soldiers attached to the Parachute Regiment opened fire at a civil rights march in Derry, killing 13 innocent civilians, Bloody Sunday is one of the best dramatisations of a terrible day in Northern Irish history.
Unfortunately, the film, which was rumoured to feature in Oscar nominations lists, was deemed ineligible as it was played on Irish and British television on the same date as its release.
Greengrass and co. laboured to make the film look as authentic as possible, using very little lights to let the natural light on set, making the film look more authentic.
That, coupled with an amazing performance from James Nesbitt who played Ivan Cooper, the leader of the civil rights march makes this an upsetting watch, but certainly one that is entirely worthwhile.
Bloody Sunday will air on Saturday 1st February at 22.50. You NEED to check this out!
