No Regrets – Six Things to Consider Before 2013 Is Over

Looking back on the twelve months just passed, and forward to a new year.

At this time of year it’s natural to reflect on the months that have passed and think about what you’ve seen and done, your achievements and regrets, and your hopes for the future.

Before the sun sets on 2013, here are six questions you should ask yourself.

What have I achieved this year?

It’s easy to scoff at yourself and think ‘nothing’, but that’s never true. If you changed jobs, travelled somewhere new, made new connections with people you’ve grown to love… it all counts. Grab a pen and paper and list every little thing you did this year that you’re proud of. It will give you a new outlook on the days that have been, and inspiration to go above and beyond in the days to come.

What do I need to let go of?

If you’re carrying emotional baggage, you need to acknowledge it before you can properly let go. Give yourself the time and freedom to sit and think about what’s weighing on your mind, and consider whether it’s worth carrying those problems into another year.

How has most of my time been spent?

We’re all working harder for less money these days, but if you’re killing yourself to be first in and last our of the office, checking emails on your ‘down’ time and getting some more done at the weekend, your life is passing you by. You need to start allotting yourself some time to relax, to enjoy the company of those you love, and to just sit and think. Reevaluate your work/life balance, and promise yourself at least one hour a day where you’re not working, travelling, cleaning or taking care of others.

Am I in the right place?

This question refers to both your physical and your mental state. If you don’t enjoy where you live or work, you need to think about moving. If your mental state isn’t right, nothing else will make you happy. Address and acknowledge your feelings, then listen to your heart and act on it.

What do I want to achieve next year?

Vague statements like ‘I want to get fit in 2014’ are useless. Whatever your goals are, be specific about them. Sign up for a 5k in March, and use an app to help yourself gradually build up to it. Make definitive goals instead of vague promises to yourself, and you’re far more likely to achieve.

Have I told the people I love how I feel?

It’s the most basic of human needs, to love and be loved. We can al be guilty of letting days and weeks slip by without telling our near and dear how we feel. New Year’s is as good a time as any to share the love, and it’s a rule of the universe that what we put out there, we get back.
