91-year-old The Sound of Music actress Eleanor Parker passed away yesterday due to complications from pneumonia.

The three time Academy Award winning actress was widely known for her part as Baroness Elsa Schraeder in the 1965 Sound of Music film.

Parker was nominated for Oscars in 1950, 1951 and 1955, but then saw her career begin to slow down in the early 1960s, until her last  The Sound of Music, in which her character loses Christopher Plummer’s Captain Von Trapp to Julie Andrews’ Maria.

In a statement Mr Plummer said: ‘Eleanor Parker was and is one of the most beautiful ladies I have ever known.

‘Both as a person and as a beauty. I hardly believe the sad news for I was sure she was enchanted and would live forever.’
