Remembering JFK – Six Of The Most Interesting Films And Documentaries On The Kennedy Assassination

For JFK enthusiasts, here's some of the most interesting work on the fallen President...

Sue Murphy

On November 22nd 1963, John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas barely an hour after he got off the plane for his visit. There have been so many documentaries and films about that day in Dallas that it is often difficult to find just one to watch. Here are six of our suggestions.

1. JFK

Oliver Stone’s conspiracy theory-filled JFK is essential viewing for those with any kind of interest in the assassination and subsequent investigation. Examining the assassination with a new set of theories, JFK asked its audience to look at the world’s most famous murder in a new light. Unfortunately, most of it is not exactly fact, even though most take it for granted that it is.

2. Parkland

Released this Friday, Parkland takes a look at Dallas on the day of the shooting and the people who fought for the President’s life in Parkland hospital in the city. An interesting take on the JFK assassination, it never really looks at the actual shooting but the impact that the incident had on those who witnessed it.

3. JFK – 3 Shots That Changed America

An exceptional documentary from the History Channel, 3 Shots examines all of the footage from the President’s visit to Dallas plus all of the news reports that followed the event, in real time. There is no voice-over, there is merely a clock which states the time. Amazing viewing.

4. The Kennedy Assassination – Beyond Conspiracy

There are plenty of documentaries about the assassination conspiracy theories, Beyond Conspiracy doesn’t look at those. It presents the theory that Lee Harvey Oswald shot Kennedy and that he did in fact work alone. The main point? That America couldn’t deal with someone of so little consequence killing someone of so much consequence.

5. JFK: The End Of Camelot

One of the most famous Discovery channel documentaries, The End of Camelot takes all of the footage and examines it again in a new light. However, the interviews are amazing here, particularly the interivew with Governor Connally who was also shot in JFK’s car.

6. Killing Kennedy

The newest of the dramatizations, Killing Kennedy was broadcast earlier this month on the National Geographic Channel and stars Rob Lowe as Kennedy. The film places Kennedy’s life in parallel with his assassin’s Oswald.
