The Nine Unwritten Rules Of A Shopping Day Out

Sue Murphy

Believe it or not, there is a certain kind of structure to a shopping day out for women. We would never like to admit it, but there truly is. Here are eleven of the unwritten rules for that day.

1. Have a Coffee

Let’s face it, shopping can often just be the excuse for a get together. You must start with a coffee and maybe a sneaky cake. Before you know it, there will already be a certain amount of time cut into that shopping day.

2. Plan of Attack

Sure, you will never openly speak about it but you know EXACTLY which shops you will be hitting up and where they are located on various streets.”Just drop me at the top of that street there and I will work my way down.”

3. Time Allowed

Now that you’ve had your cake and coffee, there is only a certain amount of time for the precious shopping. While you may not be aware of it, you and your friend/s will have a certain amount of time allocated to each shop. i.e. Penneys gets about an hour at least while others will only take a quick scan.

4. Try it on, don’t try it on.

There are certain shops that you will try clothes on, they have nice changing rooms and nice staff. Others, you will be taking full advantage of that returns policy.

5. Make a Friend

Always have the banter with another random group of friends, you will inevitably get stuck in the queue for the changing room with them. By the end of that Penneys visit, you will be best friends.

6. Stop for Lunch

Realistically, you’re just over breakfast, but this is a girls day out, you need to have the lunch time. On top of that, you need to make sure you pick a place that can contain you, your friends and the millions of bags.

7. Spot the Dress

You have walked around the shop for about twenty minutes trying to find your size in a dress, then you see it, in the corner with a golden light around it. However, some other girl has also spotted it and picked it up. What to do? Stand around behind her and follow her around the shop until she puts it down of course.

8. Go Early, Leave Early

Yes, the lunch and the rambling coffee got in the way but you have a mission and you need to get through it. You will get sick of pushing your way through crazy women at a certain point and just give up. That’s “Glass of Wine” time. Wait, does that say sale?!

9. Go on your Own

We know we don’t have to spend all of our time together and there will be certain shops that other women won’t want to go to, so go it alone. You are not tied to the hip of your fellow shoppers, it is fine that you eventually want to kill them by the end of the day.
