Autumn Winter ‘13: How To Wear The Oversized Trend

Cathy Donohue

If you’re a fashion fan, you’re sure to know that oversized is one of this season’s hottest trends. Popular though it might be, it’s not the easiest style to get right.

One of the most accessible ways to wear this look is to invest in an outsize coat. Buy in it a pastel colour (we are big fans of dusty pink) and you have two trends for the price of one.

If you opt for one oversized item, then make sure the rest of your outfit balances it out. A voluminous coat can be worn with slim fit trousers or a pencil skirt to ensure your figure is not swamped.

Oversize skirts in warm autumnal shades are also popular this season. A look like this can be overpowering depending on how you style it, a crisp tailored shirt or simple t-shirt will be enough to complement it.

The oversized trend is dramatic and speaks for itself, needing little embellishment or accessories to make it work.

Wide flared trousers fit into this trend but are best suited to tall figures that can carry the height. Styled with a block heel, doctor’s satchel and fitted blazer… this look screams smart, stylish and understated.

If the oversized trend is a little too much for you, we know that cocoon coats might not be for everyone then updating your accessories is much simpler.

Large bags are everywhere, I’m sure we all know a friend who has a habit of carrying the kitchen sink around with her and carrying one of these allows you to tap into this season’s style with minimal effort.

As with accessories, big and bold goes for jewellery too. Vibrant jewel tones, unusual geometric designs, rose gold and rope chains… the list is endless.

€5 in Penneys on a statement collar is well spent, it’s oversized, cool and you haven’t had to live on beans and toast to pay for it.

However, if you do opt for one of the cosy oversized coats pictured in the gallery, we won’t judge you… chances are we are planning the same!
