We’re now almost done with the first college semester of the year and if you’re a first year, you’re probably still treating life at university like a big party.
Starting third level is a whirlwind but can mean big upheaval in your personal life.
It can put relationships under serious strain as you and your other half are pulled in different directions.
Now there’s even a term for what happens when one person blames college for the cracks in their relationship – lockering.
AskMen defines it as
“slowly freezing your significant other out of your life and blaming your studies when what’s really going on is you’re spending more time with new, exciting people and your main squeeze is starting to feel a little unexciting.”
Yep – pretty horrible and something plenty of people will relate to.
Lots of teenage relationships fizzle out when school ends and people move on but we reckon that lockering doesn’t just apply to people going to college.
Ever moved to a new place on your own, or even go travelling, and start to feel like you and your other half have less in common than you thought?
Or have you ever been in a situation where your partner’s new job pulls them away and they start hanging out with different friends and have less time for you?
Couples simply grow apart sometimes and a big life change can often be the trigger.
What can you do to stop it? Honestly, probably not a whole lot.
If ye were right for each other, ye’d make it work. A change might just highlight problems that were already simmering below the surface and since change in life is inevitable, lockering may just be something you have to roll with.
