No one looks ‘perfect’ but this portrait of American actress, Sylvia Sidney, dating back to 1933 was chosen to represent the standard face of beauty.

The photograph has been annotated to show how Sylvia’s face is ideally proportioned and in 1934 the picture was chosen to represent what a standard for beauty looked like by a conference of Southern California cosmetologists, including Wally Westmore of Sydney’s studio, Paramount.

The ‘Sidney Standard of Beauty’ was intended to serve as a guide to studio make-up artists.
