3 burger recipes that will take your BBQ to the next level

Brought to you by Lidl.

There’s nothing better than a summer BBQ.

Especially when the sun comes out. It’s the perfect excuse to have a few drinks, get the gang together and of course completely stuff ourselves with yummy food.

While the salads are important and the desserts are definitely needed, there’s one thing that takes centre stage at every BBQ and that’s the burgers.

We’ve gathered up our three favourite burger recipes that you can make at home using ingredients from your local Lidl.

It’s time to fire up the grill.

Cheese stuffed burgers from Charlotte’s Lively Kitchen.

Ingredients:

  • 500g good quality beef mince
  • 60g cheddar cheese (choose your favourite strength)
  • 1 tsp butter (about 5g)
  • ½ tsp plain flour
  • 1 tbsp milk
  • Salt

Method:

  1. Place the minced beef into a bowl and break it up slightly, then season with salt (I use about ¼ tsp).
  2. Grate the cheese (60g)
  3. Add the grated cheese, butter (1tsp), flour (½ tsp) and milk (1 tbsp) to a small frying pan and cook on a low heat until everything has melted.
  4. Divide the mince into 4 balls.
  5. Take two-thirds of one of the balls and form it into a circle about 6cm wide. Now think back to pottery classes at school and use your thumbs to make a dent in the centre of the circle, like you’re making a bowl.
  6. Pour a quarter of the melted cheese mixture into the indent in the burger.
  7. Form the remaining third of mince into a circle with the same width and carefully put in onto the top.
  8. Gently pinch around the edge to join the top to the base and then use your hands to form it into a circle. You must be very careful for this bit as the melted cheese can ooze out if you’re too heavy-handed.
  9. Repeat until you have 4 burgers.
  10. Cook your burgers on the barbeque or grill for about 15 minutes until cooked through, turning halfway through the cooking time.

Spinach, feta and turkey burgers from The Lemon Press.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound ground turkey
  • 1 cup oats
  • 2 egg whites
  • 10 ounces spinach chopped
  • 1 cup feta cheese crumbled
  • 1 tsp finely chopped onion
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 pinch salt

Method:

  1. Add all ingredients into a large mixing bowl. Combine with your hands. Do not over mix.
  2. Form into 6 patties. Preheat kitchen griddle to medium heat and spray with non-stick spray. If grilling, oil grill grate and bring to medium high heat.
  3. Heat burgers 8 minutes in griddler, or 4 minutes per side on the grill.
  4. Serve warm on a toasted whole wheat bun.
  5. Baked Falafel Burgers from The Minimalist Baker.

     Ingredients:
    • 1 bundle fresh parsley (~2 cups chopped)
    • 3 large cloves garlic
    • 1 large lemon (~2 1/2 Tbsp juice)
    •  1/2 tsp sea salt and black pepper
    • 1 1/4 tsp cumin
    • 1 can chickpeas, well rinsed and drained
    • 1/4  cup ground raw walnuts, pecans or almonds

    Method:

    1. Add parsley, garlic, lemon juice, cumin and a healthy pinch each salt and pepper to a food processor and mix to combine.
    2. Add chickpeas and pulse until incorporated but still slightly chunky. You want to maintain a bit of texture.
    3. Transfer to a mixing bowl and add nut meal and mix again until a loose dough is formed that’s firm enough to be handled. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed.
    4. Draw an “x” in the dough to form 4 sections, then use your hands to form into 4 large patties roughly 1/2-inch thick.
    5. Place on a foil-lined baking sheet and refrigerate or freeze for 15 minutes to firm up. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F in the meantime.
    6. Bake for a total of 30-40 minutes, flipping once at the halfway point for even cooking. The longer you bake them, the firmer they’ll get!
    7. Serve warm wrapped in a pita or bun.
