Eleven Memories Of Rented Accommodation From Our Student Days

Oh, we thought we were great...

Sue Murphy

We were finally out of the nest! WE WERE FREE! However, the shine wore off soon enough and it wasn’t long until we went pining back to our mothers, especially considering some of these incidents. Here are eleven memories of our accommodation during student days…

1. The heating broke at least once a year…

If you were lucky, it was fixed in within a week. If not, well, we are pretty sure every student in the country went to bed in their coat at some stage.

2. The Mice

Be honest, most of us barely cleaned the apartments and houses we lived in, mainly because we were so popular and busy. Of course, crumbs ended up everywhere and of course, they attracted furry little friends. Who didn’t have them?

3. The Bin

Nobody ever took the bin out! EVER! It was one flight of stairs! ONE FLIGHT OF STAIRS!

4. What’s a vegetable?

You managed to somehow live your life on just carbohydrates. Noodles, potatoes, chips, more noodles. Wait, do pizza toppings count as vegetables? What’s scurvy? Can I get that?

5. The Fridge

Sure, all you needed was a block of cheese, some butter and the rest of the space could be taken up with vodka and beer.

6. Cracked Mirrors

If you had any mirrors in your house when you were a student, you were lucky. Most of us had cracked, horror, freaky type mirrors.

7. Film Posters

Oh, everybody LOVED Scarface. No, none of us have seen it.

8. The Parties

You really knew you had made it in college when you got home to a party and realised you knew no one there. Literally, no one.

9. One room was always damp…

In fact, you were lucky if just one room was damp. Normally the damp in the entire house was painted over.

10. The weird housemates

Everyone had one; one of those strange elusive people that went to lectures… and the library. Where is the library?

11. Halloween/Christmas/Birthday decorations that stayed up all year round.

Ah sure, they’re up now. Might as well leave them up until the next occasion. Can we use ghost decorations at Christmas? Of course we can, it will be quirky.
