Ireland witnesses a silent rise in sexually transmitted disease.

Sexual health is an issue we should never ignore.

In a study carried out by Aviva Health insurance, 1000 people from across Ireland were confronted about their sexual health, and the results are slightly scary.

New statistics shows that 70% of people in Ireland have never had a sexual health check-up.

Here are excuses noted for not having ever attended a sexual health clinic.

56% were not concerned about their sexual health

32% were in a committed relationship.

23% always engage in protected sex.

The research showed that females are more likely to get an STI screening than males are.

Figures released by the National Disease Surveillance Centre reveal that over 12,000 people, who got checked out last year, were diagnosed with some form of sexually transmitted infection.

6,221 people were infected with Chlamydia, known as the ‘silent infection’ as very often you experience no symptoms.

The study also revealed that 72% of participants think contraception is expensive.

Dr. Ian Callanan, Medical Director of Aviva Health Insurance said, “I think many Irish adults will find this statistic among others quite disturbing given the level of awareness, the ease of access to health services and the wealth of information readily available on the risk of sexually transmitted diseases if left untreated.”

“In the last few years, Ireland has witnessed a silent rise in sexually transmitted disease, with over a third of people saying they are not concerned about their sexual health, this is a cause for worry.”
