With new Irish film Life’s A Breeze getting a release in Irish cinemas on the 19th of July, we began to think about the great films that have starred the great Fionnula Flanagan over the years. From Waking Ned to that wonderful appearance in the Guard, Flanagan has always been a fantastic ambassador for Irish acting both at home and abroad. Here are six of her finest films.
1. The Guard
In the twilight years of her life, Eileen is living out her days in an old folks home with regular visits from her son Gerry. Her scenes are perhaps the most touching in the film.
2. Four Brothers
Although she doesn’t feature for long in the film, Flanagan, playing Evelyn Mercer is murdered during a shop robbery. Her death is the reason the four brothers seek revenge. This scene alone is heartbreaking and brilliant.
3. Waking Ned
When a pensioner dies from shock after he has found out he won the lotto, the townspeople all put their claim forward for his fortune. Flanagan plays the brilliant Annie O’Shea in one of the funniest films to ever emerge from Ireland.
4. Some Mother’s Son
Arguably one of the most underrated films about the Troubles in the North, Some Mother’s Son deals with a mother’s difficult decision regarding her son during the Hunger Strikes. An amazing performance from Helen Mirren and from Flanagan as one of the other mothers, seek this one out. You won’t regret it.
5. The Others
Often cited as one of the finest horrors to ever emerge from Spain with an eerie and terrifying performance from Flanagan, the Others will stay with you long after the closing credits.
6. Life’s A Breeze
The new Irish film which will be released the 19th of July stars Fionnula Flanagan as Nan who goes in search of a lost fortune in Dublin with her family. Flanagan puts in another amazing performance in one of the funniest Irish films to grace the screen.
