There has been a huge shift in the attitudes to home hair colour and it has come a long way since the early days.
The shade ranges are fantastic, the applicators are very user friendly and the results are predictable and natural looking.
Women these days are less afraid to take colour into their own hands and experiment with a new look.
When colouring your hair at home there are a few important things to remember. You should follow the instructions carefully and this includes doing an allergy alert test each and every time you colour your hair, 48 hours before you colour to ensure you have no sensitivity to the product.
You should also do a strand test every time you colour to determine optimal timing and colour results. Perms, relaxers, previous colour and the sun can all affect your timing and colour results.
Tips From The Top On Home Colouring:
Clairol Colour Ambassador Joanne Kelly says; “It is important that you are realistic about what can be achieved at home and so should only go within two to three shades of your natural colour to ensure the best results.
“In any colour choice, I find the most useful tip is using your skin colour as a guide – so if your skin is ‘cool’ (and by that I mean fair, rosy skin and blue, green or grey eyes) go for ashy tones and mahogany brunettes and avoid warm or golden hair colours.
“If you have brown or green eyes, peachy skin and tend to suit creams, browns and autumnal colours, chances are you have warm toned skin and should opt for ‘warm’ or ‘golden’ in the shade descriptors and avoid ashier shades.
“The colour you see on the box is also just a guide. Your starting colour and the colour you are using will also determine the end colour result.”

Tips From The Top On Going Red
This week, Clairol Colour Ambassador Joanne Kelly spoke to Her.ie exclusively about going red.
“Red shades are always popular, thanks to inspirational celebrity redheads like Christina Hendricks, the epitome of the classic redhead,” Joanne said.
“If you choose to go red at home, it is important to remember the challenge with bright, vibrant shades is that they can fade more quickly than other shades. Using the inbox conditioner as a weekly treatment will help seal in your colour.
“You should also use a colour care shampoo and conditioner to help maintain the vibrancy of your coloured hair. Natural red shades suit most Irish skin tones but look for shades with depth and dimension.
“As red shades can fade, ensure you keep your newly coloured hair in good condition with regular trims and use colour care shampoos and conditioners.
“You can also boost your colour and shine between colourings with a non-permanent colour at home. This is a great way to extend the life of your colour, whether you use a permanent colour at home or between salon colourings.
“If you have a red shade that has started to fade, try nice’n easy no ammonia (24 washes) in Light Golden Red which will enrich your colour and give gorgeous, multi-dimensional shine.”
Nice’n easy no ammonia (24 washes), with new improved Colour Seal Gloss Conditioner with added fruit oils and Aloe Vera, is available nationwide in 20 shades at €5.09 RRP (retail pricing at the sole discretion of the retailer)
