Úna-Minh Kavanagh is a 21-year-old self-professed social media and current affairs fan. She has just completed a degree in Irish and Journalism in Dublin City University and she is a fluent Irish speaker.

Another of Úna’s hobbies is to blog and her latest post has gone viral after she described a physical racial assault she was the victim of on a busy street in the centre of Dublin City.

Úna was waiting outside a hotel for a friend in the city when a group of young boys passed by laughing, calling out “And you’re a fucking chink!”

Understandably exasperated, the 21-year-old journalist cursed the boys.

It is Úna’s next sentence that sends a chill down the reader’s spine:

“One of the young boys then grabbed my face and shook it, I was spat on.”

Úna describes the incident as being “frightening” and “humiliating”. She also said that nobody came to her aid. After gathering her thoughts and discussing it with her friend, she reported it to the Gardaí.

Úna completes her post by writing:

“I shouldn’t need to hide or feel scared in my own country. Racism. Hate. How dare anyone think that this disgusting behaviour is ok?

“Do I hate them? Absolutely not. I pity them and I pity their parents who have no idea of richness a multicultural society can bring. I feel sorry for them. Oh and by the way, I’m Irish.”
