Like everything in this life, love tends to come in different shapes and sizes. It also comes in variety of different intensities, disguises and periods of time.

Despite the fact that love has various aspects, there are five specific types of love that we all tend to experience at some point in our lives.

From shy love to awkward love to heart-breakingly epic love, we’ve all gone through at least one of the experiences on this list.

What are the different types of love? Read on and find out…

___________

Obsessive love is crazy, intense and slightly scary at times

Obsessive Love: This is the type of gut-wrenching love that occurs when you’re absolutely besotted with someone who just doesn’t want to give you the time of day (or worse still, someone who shifts you a few times, allows you to fall in love with them and then wants nothing to do with you).

Obsessive love is both amazing and awful in equal parts. When you’re in that compulsive state of mind, whenever something remotely promising happens with the object of your affections, you feel it tenfold. You literally feel like you’re on cloud nine. Likewise, if they tell you that it’s never going to happen ever, you feel that tenfold too (and it feels like a swarm of bees are stinging your heart out!).

Obsessive love is unhealthy love, but it’s essential for us to develop as humans. It brings out the worst in us and it’s only by going through it that we realise what we should NEVER EVER do when it comes to relationships.

Awkward love is shy, sweet and scary

Awkward Love: This is the type of love that occurs when you like him and he likes you. However, you like him so much that every time you’re around him, you lose the gift of coherent thought/speech and your face goes so red, you start to look like a tomato.

Awkward love usually happens in the early stages of your first “proper” relationship. It’s fun and nerve-wracking and terrifying, but it’s also sweet and giddy and tender at the same time. It’s pure innocence and teaches us everything we need to know about how to properly express our feelings.

Fling love is exciting, passionate and doesn’t care about what’s acceptable in public

Fling Love: This is the type of love that happens when lust takes over your body. You know that it’s completely ill-fated and that it won’t last, but you just can’t stop yourself from making out with him at every opportunity and giving his bum a sneaky squeeze when you’re out in public.

Fling love makes us feel slightly crazy and unhinged. This type of love teaches us about the power that hormones and desire can have over our bodies. It’s something that everyone should experience at least once, purely so they can recognise when they’re in danger of being completely consumed by their naughty thoughts.

Long-term love is comforting, warm and feels like a duvet

Long-Term Love: This is the type of love that makes you feel all warm and happy inside. It is established love and you can recognise it by how you dress (fleecy pyjamas are a wardrobe staple) and the conversations that you have with the object of your affections (“Of course I’ll pick your spots for you!”).

Long-term love involves disgusting coversations about bowel movements and medical conditions, in-jokes, great sex and ditching your friends in favour of quiet nights in with a takeaway and a bottle of wine. It’s the type of love that brings out the best in us and allows us to see ourselves through the eyes of another person who accepts us exactly as we are.

Long-term love is humbling, comforting and feels like a warm duvet on a wet, cold and windy day.

Friends first love is a bit of craic, endlessly entertaining and full of surprises

Friends First Love: This is the type of love that happens when you’re friends before you become lovers. It’s full of stupid fights, sweet comments about how much you fancied each other before you became a couple and acting the eejit with each other.

Friends first love is pretty cool because you know everything  about them (even the stuff that they’d usually never tell a girlfriend). It’s always fun and you know that your other half will call you on your bad behaviour and be bluntly honest with you because that’s what friends do. Plus, much and all as you hate to admit it, you sort of love the ridiculous fights.
