Breaking: dozens killed as truck crashes into crowd celebrating in France

Cassie Delaney

A truck has crashed into a crowd of people celebrating Bastille Day in Nice. Early reports say dozens of people have been killed.

The Mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi confirmed the incident on Twitter saying “Dear people of Nice, the driver of a truck appears to have caused tens of deaths. Stay for the moment in your home. More info to come.”

The incident took place on the Promenade des Anglais during a firework display, and the driver of the vehicle is said to have also died in the attack. Local police have urged people in the area to remain indoors, calling the incident “an attack”.

According to The Washington Times, the chief of the province’s police force described the events as “an attack” and has requested asked that “Nice people remain cloistered.”

Reports on Twitter also suggest that gunshots have been fired but fireworks are often set off on Bastille Day, making such early witness accounts questionable.
