May The Fourth Be With You – Twelve Reasons Why Star Wars Isn’t Just For The Nerds

You don't have to necessarily be a nerd to check in with Luke and Co.

Sue Murphy

You would be forgiven if you looked at someone really skeptically if they suggested breaking out the Star Wars boxset and embarking on a marathon viewing session over the weekend, but there is more to the films than originally meets the eye.

Partially due to the popularity of the series, partially due to a lot of people who are extremely invested in the Star Wars franchise, many have felt alienated by what is actually a run of pretty good films. Well, except for the first three.

1. Lightsaber

This is the first, and perhaps the most important reason to watch Star Wars. Lightsaber. Best weapon ever.

2. It’s one of those timeless stories…

The first Star Wars film was released in 1977, and yet it is still as relevant now as ever. A son and father divide, a love story, good versus evil, the hero’s journey, they’re all in there and more.

3. You will understand far more pop culture references

Like this Family Guy one… And probably countless others.

4. It’s a downright classic

Everyone knows Star Wars, it is constantly referred to in film lists, pop culture and with good reason. It’s a classic. Kids love it, parents love it. Star Wars is just a classic story told incredibly well by a director with some real vision.

5. It’s a love story

No, we’re not talking about Luke and Leia (you’ll understand why soon). We’re talking Han and Leia… or Harrison Ford when he was extremely young.

6. You will marvel at the universe

Honestly, think about it. If you went to see this film in 1977, you would be blown away. Lucas introduced everyone to a story populated with characters who were literally out of this world.

7. Hayden Christenson, although a truly woeful actor, is actually kind of pretty.

8. Yoda

There is none wiser.

9. Be the wiser

A lot of people tend to pull Star Wars apart without ever even seeing it. Be the wiser and be informed. Even if you don’t like it, at least you can still issue a “well I have seen it and I still think that” line.

10. THAT Soundtrack

John Williams, arguably the greatest film composer ever

11. I Know

Just one of the sweetest scenes going. And entirely improvised.

12. The Jedi Knights

If we wanted to be any kind of good guy, we would want to be a Jedi Knight. Cool cloack, great weapon, ability to control people. Best job ever.
