City Break: Here’s how to spend the perfect weekend in Amsterdam

Alice Murray

Brought to you by Alcatel.

Pack your bags, we’re off to the ‘Dam.

To celebrate the launch of Alcatel’s new POP 4 smartphone, the company is offering all customers who buy the phone an amazing flight offer to one of nine European destinations.

With this in mind, we’re taking a closer look at one of the amazing cities you could be visiting, Amsterdam.

Here’s our guide to having an awesome weekend in the Dutch capital.

1. Go on a free walking tour

There are multiple free walking tours available in the city. Most of them leave from the National Monument at Dam Square at various points throughout the day. The tours are normally 2 1/2 hours long and show you lots of the main sights along the way. Best of all they’re free (although you can tip your guide if you want).

Our cute group ^^ and the craziest person in the middle??? thanks #freewalkingtouramsterdam

2. Visit Anne Frank’s House

A weekend to Amsterdam wouldn’t be complete without a trip to Anne Frank’s house. The museum is one of the best-known tourist attractions in the city so we would recommend going first thing in the morning so you don’t have to queue.

#AnneFrankHouse Amsterdam from April to November open every day from 9.00 to 22.00 hrs!

3. Grab brunch in De Pijp

If ever there were a hipster neighbourhood, it would be De Pijp. The ultra-cool suburb of Amsterdam is full of unusual cafes and markets. Throw on your best vintage outfit and grab some alternative grub.

4. Take a boat tour

The best way to see Amsterdam is on the water. There are loads of boat tours available but we recommend taking a cruise with a smaller company like Those Dam Boat Guys  to make sure you have the best trip and the best craic.

Alec might be a ginger, but somehow the soulless bugger gives a helluva tour! #thosedamboatguys #gingerjesus #boatbadass

5. Stuff your face

Lord have mercy! If you thought that the curry-chip from your local takeaway was good then prepared to be blown away by Amsterdam’s unbelievable frites. Try patatje oorlog, a combination of peanut saté sauce, mayo and onions. Mmm delicious!

6. Pop into the Van Gogh Museum

Soak up some culture at the Van Gogh Museum, one of the most popular museums in the world. It’s right beside the ‘I Amsterdam’ sign as well so you can grab a quick picture on your way past.

7. Cycle through Vondel Park

You can’t go to Amsterdam without riding a bicycle and one of the best (and safest) places to do it is in Vondel Park. It’s the main park in the city and a nice escape from the hustle and bustle.
