One of the most high-profile media twitter accounts, the Associated Press was hacked today and the account has been suspended while Twitter investigates.

The tweet which was sent from the account claimed that there had been an attack on the White House with explosions and that President Obama had been injured, according to the New York Times.

The account was suspended by Twitter within a matter of minutes and an official statement was released from the White House to assure everyone there had been no attack and the account had been compromised.

Soon afterwards, a statement was released on the A.P.’s website confirming that the account had been hacked and subsequently been suspended.

The AP also confirmed that they had discovered malaware had infected their computers, which may have allowed the attackers to hack into the account.

The Associated Press is the latest in a long line of twitter accounts which have been hacked recently. The account is currently still suspended.

The incident also calls into question the power of social media with the fact that one tweet demanded a clarification from the White House.
