How many spoons of sugar to add? How to remove grass stains from jerseys? The best articles to read for your next exam?
People regularly take to the websphere with everyday questions they may have and they’re almost always guaranteed to find a person willing to answer. But this one had the users of Boards.ie stumped.
An Irish woman hit the forum with what could have been a somewhat-mundane question about her social welfare entitlements, except she had something to confess. She makes a bit of money on the side, just enough to pay her bills, by a little side job that most wouldn’t even have known existed.
She sells her worn knickers online. She earns about €350 a month. Clever? You decide.
One thing’s for sure, although one or two Boards.ie users had some helpful advice, others were far too distracted by the lady’s nixer.
The helpful advice? There was some, yes…
One comment read:
“It’s an income, and will be accounted for when they assess if you are entitled to benefits.
“You can be unemployed but have loads of cash and for that reason not get full benefits.
“If they decide that this counts as work and rules you out of seeking work, your benefits can be stopped entirely.
“Perhaps another poster might come along and offer a more substantive answer, citing the various legislation and welfare website on the matter, but that’s my understanding.”

But others were, eh-hem, not so helpful:
“You’ve kept the staff in the social welfare office laughing”

And..
“At the end of the day it’s income from self employment which you have failed to declare. So you have basically committed fraud.
“Perhaps you should go to the finance company and renegotiate the repayments.
“Oh and I’ll take two pairs of panties.”

And another…
“You lost me at the highlighted bit”

The highlighted bit?
“I started to sell my used underwear online to men who have a used panty fetish”
![]()
Easily distracted, eh?
