President Higgins has given his St. Patrick’s Day address and asks people to reflect on our ‘founding moments’.
Michael D Higgins has released a lovely message to the Irish people both at home and abroad, celebrating Irishness in the run-up to St. Patrick’s Day.
He reflects on events from previous Irish generations and the freedom which was ‘handed down to us’. He speaks about the Easter Rising and the experiences of those who participated in it.
He also wants us to “imagine what Ireland might yet become” and that we have a “valuable contribution to make in the fight against extreme poverty, hunger and in our response to climate change.”
He concluded by saying, “We can in so many ways continue the work of making Ireland the real Republic of which our founders dreamed. May I wish all Irish people by birth or descent and those who have made new homes here in Ireland and all who share our national day with us, a very Happy St. Patrick’s Day.”
