Tips For The Tat – What To Consider If You Are Getting A Tattoo

Five things you need to consider when committing to that tattoo...

Sue Murphy

You’ve decided that you really want to get that tattoo you have been thinking about for a while. Before you entrust your beautiful skin over to that tattoo artist, here are some things you might want to mull over…

1. Don’t Rush It

Tattoos are a commitment, a life-long commitment. Be sure that you definitely want to have this design on your skin for the rest of your life. You know your mother was right: “Would you really want that on the back of your neck for your wedding day?” And maybe you do, but just make sure you do!

2. Where to get it done?

It’s advisable to make sure that your tattoo artist is a member of the Association of Body Modification Artists in Ireland. Members of the association have agreed to a code of ethics, practices and procedures and to uphold the Professional Standards of the Association. Research is incredibly important, go to a good artist with a good name. Tattoos obviously involve needles, make sure the tattoo parlour take adequate health precautions.

3. What part of your body to tattoo?

We hate to break it to you, but tattoos can be painful. Try to pick an area of your body that will be less painful for you, especially considering this will be your first tattoo. Tattoo artists suggest avoiding areas like your face, hands, forearms, ankle and neck for your first tattoo. You may not like it, and at least if it’s in area out of sight that can be easily covered, this won’t be a constant reminder. Unfortunately, your employment may factor into this decision also, and if it doesn’t now, consider where your career is heading as some employers do not allow their staff to have tattoos.

4. Your design

You and your tattoo are going to be together for a long time, be definite about the design. Think about the significance of the design and why you want this particular one. Also, be sure to check spelling, and if the design is in a foreign language that it means what you think it means! You wouldn’t want to turn up in Japan with your beautiful “HOPE” symbol and everyone pointing out that your design actually means “FOOL”.

5. Talk to your doctor or dermatologist

As you may already know, tattooing is a surgical procedure that involves using needles on the body. Beforehand, it might be advisable to consult your doctor to make sure you are in the prime of your health and if there is anything you should worry about. It might also be an idea to consult your dermatologist, particularly if you suffer from any skin conditions.

One last piece of advice, don’t have a stiff drink before the procedure. Many people have been under the illusion that a brandy might sort out the nerves, but alcohol thins the blood and you may bleed more during the process.
