Save money and do some good for the world around you by using simple measures to conserve energy in the home. If you’re not sure where to start – don’t worry! We’ll be bringing you one great energy-saving tip every day for the next few weeks.
Turn down the heating but still stay warm
Despite the fact that spring has technically ‘sprung’ outside, the weather is still fairly chilly (even more so in the evenings when the sun has retired for the day).
We all know that central heating tends to eat up electricity and lighting a fire every evening costs money in terms of buying fuel to keep it going. So how can you make some smart savings on your energy costs and do something that’s kind to the environment? The answer is simple.
Just lower your heating thermostate. Now, we know what you’re thinking. Why on earth would you want to lower your heating temperature if it’s freezing outside and you’re trying to keep warm? Allow us to explain.
According to estimates, for every degree that you lower the thermostat, you actually save at least one per cent on your energy bill. But how to do keep yourself warm? Well, simply put on a jumper. That way your energy costs will be lower and you’ll still be as snug as a bug.
Failing that, wrap a fleecy blanket around you when you’re watching television or invest in a small, energy-friendly heater (ideally one that will keep you warm without draining your electricity supply).
While turning down your home’s temperaure may seem counterintuitive, chances are you’ll hardly even notice the slight dip. While some people will need an extra layer to stay warm, the vast majority will be able to go about their business without feeling a chill.
