Gardaí Appeal for Any Information Connected to The Discovery of a Torso in Grand Canal

The post-mortem revealed the victim was killed at most three days before the discovery

Supt. Gerry Wall spoke to the media yesterday and appealed for any information regarding the discovery of a male torso in the Grand Canal on Saturday.

The grim discovery was made by walkers around 3.30 on Saturday near the Lyons Estate close to Ardclough village, Co Kildare.

Gardaí say the torso was discovered in a suitcase but the head and hands were not in the bag. This prevents investigators from tracing the identity of the victim through fingerprints or dental records. It is believed the victim is in his 20s.

A post-mortem by the state pathologist Dr. Michael Curtis found that the victim could only have been dead for a maximum of three days before the discovery of the remains.

Gardaí are seeking to speak to anyone who has had relatives missing since last Thursday.

Speaking yesterday, Supt. Wall said:

“This is a walkway used by people every day, and we are looking for those people to come forward.

“If you walked this canal or cycled it between last Thursday and Saturday we’re asking you to contact us.”

The suitcase was on wheels “with a handle to pull like a trolley”.
