Tinder Is Ranking You According To How Desirable You Are

The future is weird.

Tinder is the world’s most popular dating app, with an estimated 50 million users having swiped right (or left) since its inception.

People can often be swift in their judgements of others on the app, and there obviously is a fair amount of emphasis on physical appearance. Every user has most definitely taken time to perfect a Tinder selfie and has a folder on their phone of cast-offs that just didn’t make the cut.

Well, it has emerged that the app itself has its own internal rating system which is calculated by the company that ranks the most (and least) desirable people using the service. A Fast Company writer was given access to his score, and the results were very interesting.

It’s referred to as an ‘Elo score’ which is a term used to rank top chess players. Theoretically, it is meant to find you more potential dates based on your score’s compatibility with others. The criteria for the score remain unclear, but may include how many swipe right on you based on attractiveness, the education you have listed on your profile, or even your list of hobbies.

Tinder data analyst Chris Sumler summed it up thus, “Every time you swipe right on one person and left on another, you’re fundamentally saying, ‘This person is more desirable than this other person. Every swipe is in a way casting a vote: I find this person more desirable than this person, whatever motivated you to swipe right.”
