'This is just breaking my heart.'

An American food service worker was dismissed from her position for giving a free hot lunch to a 12-year-old student who didn’t have the money to pay for it.

The letter states that she was dismissed for ‘theft of school property.’

The Idaho State Journal reports that Dalene Bowden offered to pay for the lunch which cost $1.70 however her supervisor rejected the offer.“I broke the rules, but I offered to pay for the meal and I don’t think I deserved to lose my job over it,” Bowden said.

A resident of Pocatello, Raushelle Guzman has started an online petition to convince the school board to rehire Bowden which has received over 1,800 signatures.

She added: “I think the district’s policy needs to be changed. We do not need to humiliate or demean any child or worker in that situation. Students must be provided with an adequate meal.”
