Now THIS is the spirit of Christmas.

While we know that the most important thing about Christmas is spending time with people we love, it can be a stressful time for parents who want to give the best to their children.

The financial strain can be a lot for young families to cope with, so when one stranger overheard a conversation in Belfast city centre, he wanted to help.

Mum Roisin Corry described how last week she was in the city centre with her daughter when they stopped outside a jewellers.

Speaking to Belfast Live, the young mum said:

“Alexis was walking down and she’s just a typical wee girl: She saw something interesting and it caught her attention.

“She saw that a lady was putting a tray into the window – and it was just about at her eye level.

“Alexis went over to the window and she was waving at the lady saying, “Hiya” – she was just fascinated looking at it.

“I just laughed and said to her: “One day you’ll cost someone a lot of money!””

It was then a man in his 40s knelt down to the little two-year old and started a conversation. Roisin said that she hadn’t even been aware of the man nearby:

“He was looking at the other window in the jewellers. He came over and he said: “Alexis, you put out your hand.

“He took her hand, opened it and said: “There’s some money, that’s a start for you.”

“We said “Thank you so much” – and he said: “You have a lovely Christmas Alexis.”

It wasn’t until after the man walked away did Roisin realise that the man had left £100 into the small child’s hand.

Roisin added:

“I just burst into tears. I’m just so humbled that anybody would do that.

“I think it’s just incredible.”

Roisin said the money will now be used by her and her partner Andrew to buy Alexis a bike for Christmas.

Although she has no details for the man, she hopes he’ll read her interview adding:

“If he reads this I’d just say to him: Thank you so much. I just think what he did is a total inspiration.

“It just makes you believe that there are good people out there. The difference that will make to her Christmas.

“It is just incredible – and we’re now able to get her a wee bike.

“We’re still in total shock.”
