If you’re heading out for the last of your festive tipples this weekend, or worrying about squeezing into some jeans by Christmas day, this latest bout of research might be just the news for you.
According to a new study by the American Chemical Society, drinking tequila can actually help lower your blood sugar.
While researching the effects of tequila on blood glucose levels last year, scientists found that the naturally occurring sugars in the agave plant called agavins (not agave syrup) are non-digestible – so there’s no threat of raising that blood sugar.
According to Cosmopolitan, researchers divided mice into two packs.
One were given a standard diet, and the other were given a standard diet, and then drank water with agavins added.
The researchers noted that the mice with the added water not only ended up eating less overall, they also had lower blood sugar than the mice who consumed their regular diets.
For the more complicated, but interesting fact, researchers also noted that the mice consuming agavins also produced a hormone called GLP-1, which keeps the stomach feeling fuller for longer.
It also produces insulin, which could help in treating people with type-2 diabetes or struggling with weight loss.
So once it’s not followed by an array of cocktails, or a stop off in the chipper, it seems one or two little shots won’t kill you.
They might actually help you with some long-term plans.
Just remember not to overdo it. Nobody wants to do Christmas shopping on a hangover.
