In the wake of the devastating events which unfolded in Paris last night, Facebook has introduced a new function allowing users to show solidarity with those in the French city.

You can apply a filter of the French flag to your profile photo and it can be customised to last for as long as you want.

Go to this Facebook page and click on the ‘try it’ option if you’d like to add the filter.

Last night, the social media site’s Facebook safety tool allowed people in Paris to notify friends and family of their safety.

Facebook users sent push notifications to assure loved ones that they were safe, with one user describing it as a “service to humanity”.
