This elderly couple got a lot more than they bargained for when they accidentally stumbled across and illegal rave while looking for a New Year’s Day jumble sale.

The Daily Mail reports that Dick and Lil Dickens, who are both in their 80s, pulled up outside what they thought was a jumble sale at a warehouse in Cambridgeshire. Imagine their surprise when they realised they had stumbled across the end of an alleged illegal rave, where over 1,000 young people had been dancing the night away.

The couple have now become a viral sensation after this image of them hit the internet:

The picture was taken by a party-goer who wanted to post it on his Facebook page.

“We had been out shopping and we saw all these cars outside. There was no music or anything like that. The cars were parked all over the place. We thought it was a sale,” said Mr Dickens, speaking about the mix-up.

“I don’t think we were the only ones as there were several people wandering over to see what was going on. We had a look in and that was it. When we realised it wasn’t a sale we left. We’re in our 80s so we don’t want to get mixed up in anything like that,” he added.

Paul Allen, the man who took the picture, said that the couple seemed “surprised” but ended up “having as good a time as anybody else.”

“When they came in we thought they were going to have a bit of a moan but they were alright with us. They seemed like a decent little couple,” said Mr Allen.

An estimated €59,000 worth of damage was allegedly caused to the warehouse in which the rave took place. Despite the fact that they were aware of the rave, the police decided not to break it up because it was not safe for officers to disrupt the event.

A full investigation has since been launched by the police force to prosecute those who staged the rave. The good news is that Mr and Mrs Dickens aren’t in trouble for stopping by the party.
