Baked Beans

Believe it or not this quick and easy snack is a powerhouse when it comes to getting the good stuff. Full of protein, fibre, iron and calcium, and with a low GI variety of carbohydrate, baked beans are the food of champions. The tomato sauce is also a great source of lycopene, a powerful antioxidant. Serve in wholegrain toast for a superfood double whammy.

Bananas

Bananas get a bad rep as a ‘fattening’ fruit that is totally undeserved. They are higher in energy than most other fruits, but this just makes bananas a great way to refuel before or after physical exertion. Full of potassium and B6, bananas are also another great source of antioxidants. Win!

Chili peppers

All peppers are members of the capsicum family, and contain capsaicinoids. This applies especially to chili peppers, as it give these guys their heat as well as anti-inflammatory properties, and anti-cancer effects. Along with high levels of antioxidants and vitamin c, the benefits of adding a little spice to your life is the perfect excuse to cook a hearty chili or curry tonight.

Avocados

Another foodstuff that’s often unfairly labeled as fattening, avocados actually contain the best kind of fat you can ingest, while simultaneously blocking the absorption of bad fats. High in eyesight-aid lutein, and a good source of potassium and folate, so don’t let the ‘fat food’ naysayers put you off.
