Award season is in full swing but let’s face it, the Oscars are the cream of the crop and today the lovely Emma Stone and the talented Seth MacFarlane did the honours of reading out this year’s nominations.
Leading the way is Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln which received 12 nods including Daniel Day-Lewis’ for Best Actor in a Leading Role. He will go up against Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook), Joaquin Phoenix (The Master), Denzel Washington (Flight) and Hugh Jackman (Les Misérables).
Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln is leading the way with 12 nods altogether.
On the female side, the Best Actress in a Leading Role category is all about record-breakers as it includes Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild), the youngest actress ever to be nominated for the award, as well as Emmanuelle Riva (Amour), the oldest actress ever to be nominated for it.
Naomi Watts (The Impossible) is the only British representative in the category which also includes Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) and Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook).
Speaking of the British presence at the awards, Les Misérables earned eight nods including Anne Hathaway’s for Best Supporting Actress. Although she will have her work cut out with Amy Adams (The Master), Sally Field (Lincoln), Helen Hunt (The Sessions) and Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook) vying for the award as well.
Both Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman, from Les Misérables, are up for awards.
As for Best Supporting Actor Alan Arkin (Argo), Robert De Niro (Silver Linings Playbook), Tommy Lee Jones (Lincoln), Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained) and Philip Seymour Hoffman (The Master) are all in with a chance.
And possibly the most-anticipated title of the whole event, the best Picture Oscar will either go to Amour, Life of Pi, Argo, Lincoln, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Silver Linings Playbook, Django Unchained, Zero Dark Thirty or Les Misérables.
Silver Linings Playbook is up for a number of awards including Best Picture.
Not forgetting the people that made those films possible. Michael Haneke (Amour), Benh Zeitlin (Beasts of the Southern Wild), Ang Lee (Life of Pi), Steven Spielberg (Lincoln) and David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook) are all up for Best Director.
While we’re not sure which of those we’ll be rooting for, we’ll definitely have our fingers crossed for Irish filmmaker Fodhla Cronin O’Reilly whose Head Over Heels is up for Best Short Film.
