Do Not Pass Go: Hasbro Is Making Some Changes to Its Iconic Board Game

Which Monopoly piece will be given the boot? You decide!

Ah Monopoly, we have fond childhood memories associated with you. We remember how you brought out the ridiculously competitive streak in us from a young age and how we weren’t happy unless we had spent our hard-earned ‘Go’ money on Shrewsbury Road (the most expensive plot on the board) and built a hotel on that sucker.

We all have some great memories of the boardgame and we have to ask: were you a dog, a steamboat or a hat girl? You know what we’re talking about!

Everyone has a favourite Monopoly piece (and a least favourite one – we hated the thimble). And now, Hasbro Gaming, the makers of Monopoly have announced plans to “vote off” one of the iconic pieces and replace it with something a bit more modern.

Starting today, a worldwide vote is being launched which will determine what piece gets the boot for good and it’s up to the public to decide.

The original, iconic Monopoly game pieces

If you’re a Monopoly fan you’ll be able to campaign to save your favourite game piece via Facebook and Twitter by sharing some graphics and videos with your friends.

But when the vote ends, Hasbro will replace the least popular piece with a new token that players would like to have added to the game. The new tokes include a diamond ring, a guitar, a toy robot, a cat and a hellicopter.

The new game tokens voters will be able to choose from

“The tokens are one of the most iconic parts of the Monopoly game and we know that people are emotionally tied to their favourite one,” said Eric Nyman, the senior vice president and global brand leader for Hasbro Gaming.

“When we decided to replace one of the tokens in the game, we knew we have to involve our fans in the process. We can’t wait to see which iconic piece will ‘go to jail’ and which new token the fans will choose to become part of one of the world’s most popular games,” he added.

The vote ends on February 5th, so if you really want to make sure that the dog stays in the game get yourself on Twitter and search the hashtag #tokenvote or visit Facebook.com/Monopoly.
