New Year, New You, New Wardrobe! Easy Peasy Ways To Streamline Your Closet

Do you own mountains of clothes yet can never seem to find anything to wear? A well-organised wardrobe is your one way ticket to a fashionable look every day of the week.

It stands to reason that if you can actually see what you have then you will find getting dressed in the morning easier. We’re all guilty of holding on to old favourites, hoarding clothes in the hopes they will one day fit and repeat buying the same thing like there’s no tomorrow. So don’t wait until spring for a good closet clear out and instead kickstart the new year in the way you mean to go on with a streamlined stylish wardrobe.

First step is to take out all your clothes and then clean/dust/vacuum/wipe down your wardrobe. This probably sounds tedious and unnecessary but trust us if a job is worth doing it’s worth doing well so set aside an afternoon to really get stuck in.

Next get strict with yourself. How many black, bobbly T-shirts does one girl need? You’ll need to be ruthless as you make piles to keep, throw away and donate to charity. If you can wangle a friend who excels as clear outs into the process then all the better. They will have better resolve when you waver over chucking a dress you haven’t worn in two years. If goes without saying but don’t ask your friend who you know is a hoarder as they will only encourage you to hold on to things.

When sorting through your wardrobe, only keep the clothes that you wear regularly and that flatter you – throw out anything that’s ill fitting, worn out or that you just don’t wear anymore. Only keeping the clothes you regularly wear makes putting together outfits so much easier.

Organise your wardrobe with a system that best suits you so you don’t have to waste time rummaging around trying to find certain items. Neat freaks favour colour co-ordinating their clothes or alternatively keep like with like.

Now for the nitty gritty: wooden hangers look good but boy do they take up a lot of room instead try felt ones as they’re slimmer plus blouses and dresses won’t annoyingly keep slipping off them. Bonus!

Once you’ve sorted your wardrobe, it’ll be easier to identify ‘gaps’ and the sales are the perfect time to pick up style staples at reduced prices.

Here’s the clincher, you’ll need to maintain it. Nothing stays perfect for long without a little maintenace so abandoning all your good intentions and hoping for the best just won’t cut the mustard! Prevent your wardrobe from getting out of control by showing some discipline and doing regular de-cluttering sessions. If you can operate a one in/one out philosophy then fair play. If not then at least aim that for every five new items (and accessories count) one item gets binned.
